snails for betta fish?
New owner to female Betta. As per instructions, I was giving the little girl 6 pellets a day. Found out previous owner was only giving 2!!! She hasn't gone "number 2" in about 6 days.
3 days ago gave small amount of Pea only. 2nd day fed nothing. 3rd day tried spinach (she spit it out). Put her in a small bowl and gave epsom salt bath (1/2 tsp to 1 gallon H20). Still nothing-very worried as this is my daughter's pet and I love the little critter! When i put her in the bowl she flipped around a bit. is this what is called stress? I've read about adding various amounts of epsom salts-some say as much as 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon. What is a good amount? Should I keep giving her baths daily or is this too stressful. She doesn't seem like a fragile fish: plays in filter stream and rarely hides. I hope someone will help-i've tried to give this girl a really good home. She lives in a 5 gallon tank w/ filter at 76 degrees. Is the bath in

Costipated Betta- How often Epsom Salt Bath? How Much?
I rescued a female betta from Walmart and I put here in about a 1/2 gallon bowl, which she seemed to enjoy being in. At first she spit her food out, but then she started eating and all was well. I felt the temp of the water was too cold at just below 70F so I set up a 5.5 gal tank I had with a small aquaclear filter and heater. She swims into the stream and seems to like the tank, but refuses to eat; she spits it out. This is the same food she ate in the tiny bowl. Should I just return her to the tiny bowl and hope she starts to eat again? I have lots of experience with guppies and they eat anything, but this betta is too picky for her own good. Does she need company?I should have mentioned that the tank was set up with cycled water from my established tank with a sponge from that tank, so there are no cycling issues. Also, she doesn't look like she is as healthy and occassionally wobbles. Her tail fin is always closed. She did make a big bubble nest.

Why is my betta now spitting out food?
I looked at my Betta a few days ago and one of his eyes has this white film over it and is really huge compared to the other one... He hasn't been eating since... and I have know Idea what the problem could be... These are the only things I could come up with that may have caused the problem... His water was getting low and I put some more in in there with a drop of AquaSafe... The filter seems to be kind of almost messing up... like theres just a little stream of water coming out... or maybe I've been feeding him to much? That's a little weird but ya never know! I could use some advice...

Question about my sick Betta?
I have two small goldfish. They are in a 10 gallon tank. I know, I know, they need 10 gallons each, but ehy are not big enough for that stuff yet. I was going to swith them into a pond when they outgrow the tank. One of them is about 1.5 inches and the other one 2 to 3 inches. They are not bettas. They are just some regular goldfish.
What is the purpose of undergravel if I just have to vaccum it? Also, I don't know if I have an undergravel filter. It's a Tetra Whisper, if that helps. I just changed the water, and all this crap (food that they hadn't eaten, fish poop) was lying around in the water. I've had the filter in there for about a week i think. I was just wondering, should I take that gravel out? Or do my fish need it for some reason? It is all natural gravel, not colored. Also, the filter is a 10-30 gallon tank filter, I have a 10 gallon tank. The fish can't swim up when they are underthe stream of water the filter produces. is this a bad thing or does it matter?I also have in the tank a mug (like a coffee cup) because they like going in there, some fake coral, and a mirror for their excercise. The smaller one has recently been floating at the top and actually I saw him jump out of the water with his head in the air. It can't be oxygen deprivation because I just changed the water an hour ago and i saw him do it after. Also, he didn't eat any of the food I gave him. I decided the other one is autistic. He likes to sit in corners and in front of the mirror and behind the mirror obsesivel. I really do think he has a mild case of fishy autism. And i'm not making fun of autism when I say that, he really is autistic.

what is the purpose of undergravel if i just have to vaccum it all the time?
hnm... I have a 2 gallon bowl with 10 carnival goldfish and they're all at the top floating... why?

oh, I also had a male betta with my two female bettas and females killed the male then he big female killed the other female. why? can I put 3 crayfish from my backyard stream in with her now since she's aggressive and alone? she's in a bowl.

yeah. kidding. but honestly, why do people buy fish without doing a little research first? I'm getting really sick of STUPID questions that could have been avoided had they bothered to check the fish's needs BEFORE buying them. does anyone know what people just expect fish to be able to to live in anything with water they stick them in? please fill e in here, and research isn't that hard, why don't they do a google search first on the type of fish they want and check out a few pages?

added details in a sec...I wish we could have like a side panel where we have care sheets and such for each fish, where people could look before asking a question, then we wouldn't get all the same questions resulting from poor care every five seconds. everyone who wanted to could write/contribute to the care sheet and we could all vote on the best ones to leave up.

anyway, just in case anyone reads this who is planning on getting a common fish:

round bodied goldfish need 10gallons of filtered water each. slim bodied goldfish (this includes carnival goldfish) should be in nohting smaller than a 40gallon.

bettas are tropical & should have a heater, poop like every other fish and deserve filters, and are aggressive towards EACH OHTER (not most other fish). females may be kept together in groups of 3 or more if each female has 2 gallons. males should not be kept with other bettas.

these are just a few of the common mistakes made with common "easy" fish. DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!

fish help?!?
I purchased a Betta yesterday; it's my first. I have a one gallon bowl, live plants, made a nice little home for him. He shows no sign of any illness or disease, is active and already follows my finger across the bowl and comes out of his hideyhole when I come near. However, as he is my first I have a question and mild concern. In all pictures I've seen of Bettas, they have a gorgeously spread open tail fin. His stays fairly tight together, even when swimming, he doesn't spread it out much and let it flow. Is that normal or might there be something wrong? All of his fins are kindof like that except one which is broken (one of the two tiny ones that stream down beneath his head). They're not clamped real tight, but he never spreads them out much either.

Oh, and secondary question -- is it better to use filtered (at home with a Brita filter) water for him or start with tap and condition it?Thanks for your reassurances. Interestingly, I have seen his reaction to a mirror -- he spread out under his chin (looked like a lion's mane, lol) but still didn't spread any of his other fins out.

Nonetheless I'm glad to know it's not a sign of illness. I couldn't find anything about it online except that "clamped" fins is bad.

New Betta, doesn't spread his fins out?
