Vectors and speed...?
A drunken sailor stumbles 400 meters north, 600 meters northeast (45 degrees north of east), then 200 meters northwest (45 degrees north of west). Describe the final position of the sailor from the initial position with one vector (magnitude and direction). Note: you should do this by breaking up each of the motions into x and y components, and find the total displacement in the x and y directions, then the total displacement (hypotenuse) and the angle of displacement.

Please help me with this problem in the sense on how to get started and what to do. Thank you!!

Vector mathematics problem..please help!?
Person walks 400 meters north, 600 meters northeast (45 degrees north of east), then 200 meters northwest (45 degrees north of west). Describe final position of person from initial position with one vector (magnitude and direction). Break each motion into x and y components, then find total displacement in the x and y directions, then total displacement (hypotenuse) and the angle of displacement.

WHAT?!?! Ok, I've done similar problems with given magnitudes and angles, and I know how to use sin and cosine to calculate y and x, respectively. I don't know how to set this up or walk through it, and I can't remember how to use the Pythagorean Theorem (asq+bsq=csq) to plug in numbers. WIll you please take me through it?

Thank you so much! I'm enjoying physics but I struggle putting problems together when I read them.
