Why are there no senior officers in the new Star Trek movie?
...can we all give thanks for socialism gone correctly (one instance of many, indeed)?
Today the Space Shuttle Atlantis launched in the final mission to one of the greatest scientific instruments ever conceived, the Hubble Space Telescope (soon to possibly be eclipsed by the LHC, though). This is the fourth repair mission, and capitalists please take note: the first repair mission was due to the mirror producer - a private company (*gasp*) named Perkin-Elmer - who ground the mirror incorrectly...please, is that one of the examples of private greed doing things better than the government?
Launched in 1990 by Shuttle Discovery, the HST has made many unbelievable discoveries, and has photographed some of the finest natural art that exists. Amongst its many achievements (benefiting both private and public enterprise, and humankind itself) , it has:
1) Discovered black holes at the center of 99% of all galaxies (yes, including ours).
http://hubblesite.org/explore_astronomy/black_holes/
2) Given humankind the farthest glimpse backward into time we will EVER have, with the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Please view this and be prepared to be humbled: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcBV-cXVWFw
Now the Shuttle crew has launched to perform the most technically difficult mission ever: to keep our HST going for some time now, and giving us - we small humans on a tiny rock among potentially quadrillions - an even better understanding of existence and our infinitely tiny place in it.
And to think...this was all done by a governmental agency...using our money we paid into it as taxes. Indeed, one of the many examples of Socialism's benefits.
So, for those who wish to expand their horizons further - those who look up at the night sky in amazement - feel proud that our government (i.e. the citizens) had the foresight and technology to do what was recently thought impossible. To those who only want what they think is theirs, those who only care how many fellow humans they can shaft with their callous disregard: have fun in your caves.yaad: most repubs and neocons I witness on here term their taxes as a redistribution of wealth.jp: JFK said: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish"...one man...working through the government, and with our best interests in mind, motivated a nation to do the impossible...Why do you think it can't happen again?steve: r e a d s l o w l y t h e n
So, on this sad yet challenging occasion...?
I often dream that I'm aboard the original Enterprise, on an important mission. Can't remember much, except that Spock is my best buddy. He holds up a test tube to Kirk, to explain something that's happening out in space. I observer and help him with this. Uhuru and Yeoman Rand are on the bridge, but not Sulu or Chekov. And this is long BEFORE the new movie! What do you think these PLEASANT dreams might mean?
Dreams about Star Trek?
KINDERGARTEN TEACHER:
To get to the other side.
PLATO:
For the greater good
ARISTOTLE:
It is the nature of chickens to cross roads.
KARL MARX:
It was a historical inevitability.
TIMOTHY LEARY:
Because that's the only trip the establishment would let it take.
SADDAM HUSSEIN:
This was an unprovoked act of rebellion and we were quite justified in dropping 50 tons of nerve gas on it.
RONALD REAGAN
I forget.
CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK;
To boldly go where no chicken has gone before.
HIPPOCRATES;
Because of an excess of phlegm in its pancreas.
ANDERSEN CONSULTING;
Deregulation of the chicken's side of the road was threatening its dominant market position. The chicken was faced with significant challenges to create and develop the competencies required for the newly competitive market. Andersen Consulting, in a partnering relationship with the client, helped the chicken by rethinking its physical distribution strategy and implementation processes. Using the Poultry Integration Model (PIM) , Andersen helped the chicken use its skills, methodologies, knowledge, capital and experiences to align the chicken's people, processes and technology in support of its overall strategy within a Program Management framework. Andersen Consulting convened a diverse cross-spectrum of road analysts and best chickens along with Andersen consultants with deep skills in the transportation industry to engage in a two-day itinerary of meetings in order to leverage their personal knowledge capital, both tacit and explicit, and to enable them to synergize with each other in order to achieve the implicit goals in delivering and successfully architecting and implementing an enterprise-wide value framework across the continuum of poultry cross-median processes. The meeting was held in a park-like setting, enabling and creating an impactful environment which was strategically based, industry-focused, and built upon a consistent, clear, and unified market message and aligned with the chicken's mission,vision, and core values. This was conducive towards the creation of a total business integration solution. Andersen Consulting helped the chicken change to become more successful.
LOUIS FARRAKHAN;
The road, you see, represents the black man. The chicken "crossed " the black man in order to trample him and keep him down.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.;
I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question.
MOSES;
And God came down from the Heavens, and he said unto the chickens, "Thou shalt cross the road". And the chicken crossed the road, and there was much rejoicing.
FOX MULDER;
You saw it cross the road with your own eyes. How many more chickens have to cross the road before you believe it?
RICHARD M. NIXON;
The chicken did not cross the road. I repeat, the chicken did NOT cross the road.
MACHIAVELLI;
The point is that the chicken crosses the road. Who cares why? The end of crossing the road justifies whatever motive there was.
JERRY SEINFELD;
Why does anyone cross the road? I mean, why doesn't anyone ever think to ask, what the heck was this chicken doing walking around all over the place, anyway?
FREUD;
The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road reveals your underlying sexual insecurity.
BILL GATES;
I have just released the new Chicken Office 2000, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your check book.
OLIVER STONE;
The question is not, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" Rather, it is, "Who was crossing the road at the same time, whom we overlooked in our haste to observe the chicken crossing?"
DARWIN;
Chickens, over great periods of time, have been naturally selected in such a way that they are now genetically disposed to cross the roads.
EINSTEIN;
Whether the chicken crossed the road or the road moved beneath the chicken depends on your frame of reference.
BUDDHA;
Asking this question denies your own chicken nature.
RALPH WALDO EMERSON;
The chicken did not cross the road....it transcended it.
ERNEST HEMINGWAY;
To die. In the rain.
COLONEL SANDERS;
I can't believe I missed one.
BUSH JUNIOR:
The stupid chicken can't and I say can't cross the road, we will use any force necessary to not allow the chicken to cross the road, we will une new U.N. resolutions to stop the chicken from even thinking of crossing the road, like my father said: the chicken should not cross the road over my dead body, I swear that we will make the chicken look in AWE before trying to cross anything.OBAMA:
My fellow americans: vote for the change, Vote for the chicken to cross the road.I forgot one person who has a say about the chicken:
CLINTON: From the oval office, I did not see the chicken cross the road, I had nothing to do with that chicken, or the stains made by that chicken.
WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?
I could've sworn I saw him do a 1 sec cameo on the bridge of the Enterprise...I think right after Kirk and Sulu get back from their away mission.
Was Kal Penn in the new Star Trek movie?
Congressional Joint Resolution Regarding Opposition of the United States to the Practice of Torture by Foreign Governments...
The United States began its formal domestic effort to eradicate torture when Congress adopted the Joint Resolution Regarding Opposition of the United States to the Practice of Torture by Foreign Governments in 1984. The Joint Resolution affirmed “a continuing policy of the United States government to oppose the practice of torture by foreign governments through public and private diplomacy . . . [and to oppose] acts of torture wherever they occur, without regard to ideological or regional considerations . . . .”
Furthermore, the Joint Resolution decreed that the United States government must work with both governments and NGOs to combat the practice of torture worldwide. Section 2(a) of the Joint Resolution urged the executive branch to engage more fully in this enterprise through: asking the Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations to continue to raise the issue of torture in that forum, asking the President to be actively involved in the prescription of the Convention Against Torture, and asking the U.S. Secretary of State to issue formal instructions to the chief of every U.S. mission abroad. This last provision is the most important and most assertive aspect of this section of the Joint Resolution, for it demands that the Secretary of State indicate exactly what U.S. policy is with respect to torture and gives instructions that the chiefs of mission examine the allegations of torture in that state. Finally, this section instructs the Secretary of State to “express concern in individual cases of torture brought to the attention of a United States diplomatic mission including, whenever feasible, sending United States observers to trials when there is a reason to believe that torture has been used against the accused.” These far-reaching requests that the executive branch investigate, publicize, intervene, and observe allegations of torture within a foreign sovereign state send a political signal that such conduct is well within the bounds of diplomatic responsibility and the mandate of international law.
Is this pure Hypocrisy? Torture and the United States Policy?
WORF: Captain, this planet seems to be uninhabited.
BELLA: Speak for yourself.
WORF: Bah! You shouldn't sneak up on a Klingon like that.
PICARD: Why, hello! I am Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation Starship Enterprise. Our mission is to seek out new life and new civilizations.
BELLA: Pleased to meet you. I'm Bella and this is my vampire Edward.
EDWARD: Oh, I'm "your" vampire now? I thought you were "my" human.
BELLA: Edward, please! Not in front of our guests.
DATA: Captain, this one seems to be sparkling.
PICARD: He is? Scan him for nanites.
EDWARD: I don't think so!
(Edward lunges at Data and sinks his teeth into his neck).
PICARD: He's a Borg! Everyone, back to the ship!
BELLA: No!
EDWARD: I told you our love was doomed.
BELLA: Our love isn't doomed. You're just get so melodramatic around company.
EDWARD: Bite me.
BELLA: Bite me.
What do think of my "Star Trek"/"Twilight" crossover?
In the Star Trek: Totality series, Norinda, a shape shifting alien terrorizes the galaxy, after conquering the Andromeda Galaxy. It is said in the novels that Kirk and the Enterprise encountered Norinda in the first six months of their original five year mission. Therefore I would assume that she is in a TOS episode, but I cannot find which one, if any.
What Star Trek TOS episode is Norinda in?

Taking On Fannie And Freddie Without stronger regulation, argues Rep. Richard Baker, the mortgage giants present a huge market risk
By Ron Insana; Richard Baker
September 1, 2003
(MONEY Magazine) – Rep. Richard Baker is a driven man. The mission of this firebrand Louisiana Republican: to ensure that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two of the world's largest financial institutions, aren't on a collision course with disaster. Baker, a minister's son and amateur astronomer, goes so far as to compare the potential havoc that, in his view, inadequate oversight of the two mortgage titans could wreak on financial markets and taxpayers to the fallout from an asteroid hitting the earth.
Baker, chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees the two congressionally chartered "government-sponsored enterprises" (GSEs), has for years been voicing concerns about Freddie, formally known as the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, and Fannie, the Federal National Mortgage Association. A recent internal investigation of accounting at Freddie Mac proved his concerns about the $34 billion (market capitalization) company to be well founded, with allegations of lax internal controls and questionable accounting maneuvers. Nothing racist about common sense and crooks!Man from ACORN: Are you saying that blacks aren't affected and don't invest in WallStreet? The black politicians who fought tooth and nail to defend the corruption are far from poor. The black homeowners who lost their homes got hurt too. In other words everyone got hurt and this is a major contributing factor to the current economical situation we are in.Maldavi: Nothing racial at all about it until you decided to add the 'Nothing racist' comment.
Hmm... wonder why you felt compelled to do that?

I was responding to a poster! Is that still legal under Obama rule?ty claudiac, I think Baker was on the money!
